History
Pre-Chernobyl
The city of Pripyat was founded February 4th, 1970[3], as an atomgrad[4], built to serve the nearby Chernobyl plant[3:1]. By 1979 the city was officially named
Chernobyl
All surrounding cities were evacuated on April 27th, 1986[3:2]. It took an estimate of 2 full days to evacuate ~50,000 residents of Pripyat.[5] A public admission from the Soviet Union only came out, when Sweden’s government pressured them, after monitors spiked with radiation.
Post-Chernobyl
Pripyat is directly administrated from Kyiv; Ukraine’s Ministry of Emergencies now watches it.
Landmarks
Pripyat amusement park
The soviet union constructed the attractions as a “Park of Culture and Rest”, common in large cities inside the soviet union.
Pripyat Ferris Wheel
The Pripyat Ferris Wheel was built with the rest of the park, it is the attraction that stands out the most. The Ferris Wheel was set to release on March 1st[6]. There are rumors, that it could have opened a day after the disaster, to distract people.[7]
Azure Swimming Pools
The Azure Swimming pools were built in the 1970’s, and remained in use till the accident. The pools were clean excessively by the liquidators post Chernobyl[8]. Azure pools are considered to be part of the cleanest (Radiation wise) part of Pripyat. Despite that, the pools have not been maintained since 1998, and it’s usually discouraged to go or it’s usually advised against.[8:1]
